Federal health officials plan to audit the research data of a study that found a partial mastectomy with radiation just as effective as a full mastectomy in treating breast cancer, it was reported Sunday.

Auditors will study all related documents at the University of Pittsburgh, which coordinated the study, after the news that some research data had been falsified, the New York Times said.

The National Cancer Institute will also examine the original records at many of the 89 U.S. and Canadian hospitals where 1,843 women took part in the surgical study that helped change the way breast cancer is treated.

An investigation by the Federal Office of Research Integrity reported last year that Canadian scientist Dr. Roger Poisson of St. Luc’s Hospital in Montreal falsified data he submitted for the study.

Officials of the cancer institute last week stood by assurances that there is no reason to doubt the major conclusions of the Pittsburgh study.
