World IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON : Colombia President Elected OAS Chief

Colombian President Cesar Gaviria, who had the support of the United States and other large countries in the region, was elected as head of the 34-member Organization of American States. Gaviria, who will take office in August, defeated Costa Rican Foreign Minister Bernd Niehaus Quesada on a 20-14 vote. Gaviria will succeed Joao Baena Soares of Brazil.
