KNITTING WITH DOG HAIR: A Woof-to-Warp Guide to Making Hats, Sweaters, Mitten & Much More by Kendall Crolius & Anne Montgomery (St. Martin’s Press: $9.95; 101 pp., illustrated, paperback original). Cruella DeVil’s plan to make dog-skin coats seemed monstrous in “101 Dalmatians,” but Crolius and Montgomery suggest that the next time Rover sheds, the reader gather up the hair and get to work. And the process they describe sounds like a lot of work: The hair has to be washed, oiled, carded and spun before it can be used. Still, the authors insist the resulting garments don’t smell when it rains.
