* * * Eugenius, “Mary Queen of Scots,” Atlantic. The second album from this Glasgow band, fronted by ex-Vaseline Eugene Kelly, is an oddly addictive mix of Velvet Underground-style distortion and crystal-clear vocals. Muted melodies begin beautifully, fill with tension and then explode into bursts of guitar feedback with little warning. “Pebble” and “Easter Bunny” are as haunting as they are easy to sing along with.

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
