A Baldwin Brothers Crib Sheet

There were, at last count, four members of that famous Long Island thespian family, the Baldwins of Massapequa, active before the cameras of Hollywood. And you have to admit it: Sometimes it’s tough to tell this set of sexy siblings apart. Sure, it’s easy to remember that Alec is the one who married Kim Basinger. But it was Daniel or William who showed up in “Three of Hearts,” the romantic comedy about a three-way love affair? Stephen or Daniel who played Daryl Hannah’s caddish husband in “Attack of the 50-Foot Woman”? Stephen or William in “8 Seconds,” playing a real-life rodeo star? Herewith, the definitive guide to help tell those pesky Baldwins apart.

Name: Alec Age: 35 Significant other: Wife Kim Basinger, married August, 1993. First made an impression: On “Knots Landing,” as a randy evangelist. Movie breakthrough role: As lovable CIA agent Jack Ryan in “The Hunt for Red October.” Most recently seen: Imitating Steve McQueen in “The Getaway.” Look: Leading man handsomeness: killer smile, blue eyes, great physique. Typical role: Suave, intelligent, cool leading man with sensitivity and self-deprecating sense of humor. Chest hair: Like a gorilla. If he didn’t shave his neck, his chest hair would grow all the way to his eyebrows. Extracurricular activities: Animal rights activism; moral support of Kim’s trial. Career trajectory: On the rise until “Marrying Man” debacle; playing Broadway cost him Jack Ryan franchise; still the biggest star of the four but in need of a hit; maybe summer’s “The Shadow” will do the trick. *

Name: Daniel Age: 33 Significant other: Wife Elizabeth; married April, 1990 First made an impression: As a talkative detective with marital problems on cult NBC hit “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Movie breakthrough role: Still waiting. Most recently seen: In HBO’s remake of “Attack of the 50-Foot Woman,” flailing helplessly in Daryl Hannah’s hand. Look: Alec, with jowls. Looks chunkier than he is because he lacks a neck. Typical role: Cocky sidekick; lowlife philanderer with a bad attitude. Chest hair: Unknown; has yet to doff his shirt in a prominent role. Extracurricular activities: Until recently, waiting to see if “Homicide” was going to be renewed (it was). Career trajectory: Needs to make an impact in a big film or be reduced to being the Zeppo of the Baldwin brothers. *

Name: William Age: 31 Significant other: Most recently linked to Chynne Philips. First made an impression: In “Flatliners,” as Kevorkian manque with a conscience. Movie breakthrough role: As sexy firefighter in “Backdraft.”

Most recently seen: In the altogether with Sherilyn Fenn and Kelly Lynch in “Three of Hearts” and with Sharon Stone in “Sliver.”

Look: Eurotrash version of Alec: slightly watered down and callow; prettier but less rugged. Typical role: Romantic lead with much to learn--about women and himself. Chest hair: Virile thatch, but not overrun like Alec. Extracurricular activities: Upholding the Baldwin bachelor tradition, so that his brothers might live through him vicariously. Career trajectory: Needs a role that casts him as something other than the roadshow Alec. *

Name: Stephen Age: 27 Significant other: Wife Kennya; married June, 1990. First made an impression: Slapping leather on “The Young Riders.” Movie breakthrough role: As the white guy in Mario Van Peebles’ “Posse.” Most recently seen: In “8 Seconds” as a rodeo star and in upcoming “Threesome” as one-third of an unconventional roommate arrangement. Look: Like an Alec whose DNA has been scrambled. Typical role: The hero’s slightly doofy buddy with a heart of gold; the boor with a secret streak of vulnerability. Chest hair: Hairless as a pre-adolescent. Extracurricular activities: Posing for beefcake calendar. Career trajectory: On the upswing, if he can grow into character roles once played by Warren Oates and Randy Quaid.
