Village 1-Woman Police Department Shuts Down
The police department has disbanded, and Carol Goff is out of a job.
Village officials surveyed Martin’s 462 residents earlier this year, asking if they were willing to pay higher property taxes to cover the $29,000-a-year expense for the one-woman department.
About 60% said no. So the department officially disbanded Friday.
“It’s really hard--law enforcement is in my blood,” said Goff, who was the entire village police force for more than 10 years.
Goff, a 38-year-old single mother of three children, will keep working part-time with the police department in nearby Allegan.
