Knowing the Score for the 1994 Bowl Season

Six symphonic ensembles--visiting orchestras from Budapest, Manchester (England), San Francisco and Detroit, as well as the resident Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl Orchestra--will play outdoor concerts at Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 1994, the L.A. Philharmonic Assn. announced Wednesday.

The 10-week summer schedule, preceded by a six-concert preview week, was announced at a press conference preceded by the dedication of a large, new picnic area at the Bowl. The preseason events begin June 28, the season proper, July 5, ending Sept. 18. From July 11 through 17, the Bowl will be the site of arts activities connected with the “World Cup USA ‘94” soccer competition, although it will not host the “Three Tenors” concert which will take place at Dodger Stadium.

Both Esa-Pekka Salonen, music director of the Philharmonic, and John Mauceri, conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, will lead their respective ensembles during this 73rd Bowl season. Salonen will be on hand for two weeks, Aug. 9-18, conducting the Philharmonic in previews of its European tour programs. Mauceri will conduct seven weekends (including three Fourth of July holiday weekend concerts), a Wednesday night Virtuoso Series event and one pair of midweek concerts.

Of visiting ensembles, the Halle Orchestra, from Manchester, led by its music director, Kent Nagano, will play four programs on five nights, Sept. 6-10. The Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted by Ivan Fischer, will appear at the Bowl for five performances,July 26-30. Herbert Blomstedt, outgoing music director of the San Francisco Symphony, will bring that orchestra to Cahuenga Pass for three programs, Aug. 30-Sept. 1. And the Detroit Symphony, under its music director, Neeme Jarvi, will give three performances, Aug. 23-25.

American conductor Andrew Litton leads the season-opener, July 5, when Yefim Bronfman will be piano soloist. That program lists music by Berlioz, Beethoven and Rachmaninoff.

Besides those already named, conductors during the summer include Larry Baird, Matthias Bamert, George Daugherty, Carlo Rizzi, Gerard Schwarz (who leads two preseason concerts) and John Williams.

Among singers appearing during the summer will be June Anderson, Leny Andrade, Ray Charles, Rosemary Clooney, Jane Eaglen, Craig Estep, Wilhelmenia Fernandez, Chaka Khan, Ute Lemper, Patti LuPone, Lou Rawls, Curtis Rayam, Lisa Saffer and Mel Torme.

Violin soloists include Bruce Dukov, Pamela Frank, Gidon Kremer, Cho-Liang Lin, Gyorgy Pauk, Gil Shaham, Christian Tetzlaff, Alexander Treger and Sidney Weiss.

The list of pianists: Emanuel Ax, John Bayless, Bronfman, Nikolai Demidenko, Peter Donohoe, Barry Douglas, Helene Grimaud, Stephen Hough, Zoltan Kocsis, Ivan Moravec, Olli Mustonen, Maria Tipo, Alexander Toradze and Andre Watts.

A 15th season of Jazz at the Bowl will comprise five events, and appearances by, among others, Ray Charles, guitarists George Benson and Lee Ritenour, the Joe Pass Quartet, harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans, soul singer Etta James with the Roots Band, saxophonists Grover Washington Jr. and Sonny Rollins, and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.

In a ceremony preceding the press conference, a 13,700-square-foot area for lawn picnics, which is promised to accommodate 1,800 people, was dedicated. The new picnic venue is a recent addition to the L.A. County-owned Bowl grounds, and is located adjacent to Highland Avenue, south of the amphitheater.
