Whales: The Dangers of Mistaking the Seasons
As to the person putting the captions on the pictures for your article on whales (March 24), “Exhibiting the Human Touch,” they should have read the article first.
The picture on pages 13 and 14 is captioned, “A whale nuzzles up to a boat and the outstretched hands of humans. During mating season off Baja, whales enjoy the contact.” During mating season you risk getting capsized (or getting hit by a 10-foot-long penis) if you are near the whales. It should have read, “During nursing season . . . “ All the adult gray whale males have long since departed the lagoons for their migration north while the mothers nurse their young.
Other than the above, I congratulate your staff for an excellent article.
