LOS ANGELES : Work Begins on Pasadena Leg of Light Rail Line
With Southland civic leaders on hand, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority began construction Friday on the Pasadena Blue Line light rail system.
The 13.6-mile, 14-station line from east Pasadena to Downtown Los Angeles will be the third light rail line in the Metro network. When it opens in 1998, it will serve Pasadena, South Pasadena, Highland Park, Chinatown and Downtown Los Angeles.
Work got under way with a ceremonial start to the demolition of the single-track bridge over the Los Angeles River that must be replaced with a two-track structure to accommodate trains in both directions. Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and Pasadena Mayor Rick Cole were among those on hand.
