LOS ALAMITOS : Psychologist Named to School Board Post

Share

A child psychologist from Seal Beach was appointed this week to the board of the Los Alamitos Unified School District.

Mathew Duggan, 35, will fill the seat left vacant when Jeanne Flint resigned in February. His appointment to the five-member board expires in November, but Duggan said he plans to seek election to the seat at that time.

“It’s a fabulous opportunity to help the kids,” said Duggan, a Seal Beach resident. “I’ve dealt a lot with schools and that got me interested in doing more at a larger level.”

School board members picked Duggan on Monday from among 13 applicants after interviews conducted that same day. After he was sworn in, he participated in Monday’s board meeting.

Duggan said the district’s biggest challenge is getting more money to support school programs.

“We have to convince people in the government that funding education is crucial to the betterment of this country,” Duggan said. “Children are the most underrepresented segment of our society.”

Duggan has a private practice in child psychology in Long Beach, and he is a former consultant to the Los Angeles Unified School District. He is also a member of a drug education panel at Wilson High School in Long Beach.
