David Steiger Wolfe; Dancer and Choreographer

David Steiger Wolfe, 40, choreographer who continued working despite blindness. Born in New York City, Wolfe earned degrees at Brandeis University and Smith College. He danced and choreographed primarily in Boston but also in New York, Seattle and San Francisco. In the 1980s, he created dance for his own company, “David Wolfe Dances,” and taught in the Boston area. Despite losing his eyesight to AIDS, Wolfe last year created “A Simple Story,” a dance presented in a program by gay and lesbian choreographers as part of Boston’s Gay Pride Arts Festival. Asked how he could choreograph when blind, Wolfe recalled Beethoven’s ability to compose when deaf. Each could work, he said, through extensive knowledge of the craft and the ability to imagine the work. On Sunday in Boston of AIDS.
