LINCOLN HEIGHTS : Concert to Help Pay Bills for Ill Boy, 13

Share

An eclectic group of performers and musicians will gather Friday at Plaza de la Raza to raise money for a 13-year-old poet with Epstein-Barr syndrome.

Ehecatl Chumacero of Pasadena received the diagnosis one month ago and has missed two months of school, said his mother, Olivia Chumacero. Ehecatl, who attended Washington Middle School, has undergone physical therapy and requires more medical attention. His medical bills have already reached $4,000 and will continue to rise, his mother said.

Chumacero, the mother of two, has no insurance.

“The doctor told us they don’t have any Western cure for this, and they tell him to rest and eat well,” said Chumacero, a writer and teacher of film and theater at Mujeres y Hombres Nobles, an alternative school in East Los Angeles. “I’ve met other people who have dealt with this and I’m trying to find out what’s best for him.”

The performers, including Luis Alfaro, host Diane Rodriguez and members of Latins Anonymous and Culture Clash, are friends of Chumacero’s and have agreed to help. Other performers include Evelina Fernandez, Maria Elena Gaitan and the singing group Los Jalapenos.

Tickets are $15 for the show, which begins at 8 p.m. Plaza de la Raza is at 3540 Mission Road.

Reservations: (818) 564-1546.
