Sales Strong for Apple PowerPC: Apple Computer Inc.’s new line of Power Macintosh computers are selling so well that retailers report shortages and back orders for some models, according to analysts and retailers. Apple introduced the new souped-up versions of the venerable Macintosh computer in mid-March to boost its 11% worldwide market share and with the aim of recapturing excitement in the market. Although it is one of the world’s largest computer makers, Apple has been concerned that its market share was increasingly vulnerable to advances in software by Microsoft Corp. and by faster chips being developed by Intel Corp.
