Wages Rise, but Not as Much: The Japan Federation of Employers Assns., or Nikkeiren, said average wage hikes so far this year are about 3.1%, or $84.5 per month, Nikkei English News reported. The increase is down 0.75 percentage points from one year ago. This is the fourth consecutive year of shrinking increases. About 77% of 324 firms contacted responded to the survey, the report said. Most of the collective bargaining done by Japanese labor unions takes place during simultaneous annual spring wage negotiations, called the shunto.
