INGLEWOOD : 30 Apply for McKenna’s Superintendent Post

Share

Thirty applicants are vying to replace Inglewood schools Supt. George J. McKenna III, whose contract expires in June.

The school board announced in September that it would not renew the contract for McKenna, who has held the job since 1988. The 3-2 vote of no confidence came after the district was assigned a fiscal overseer by county and state education officials, who said Inglewood schools were on the brink of financial insolvency and suffered from poor fiscal planning.

McKenna could not be reached for comment regarding the applicants.

The district’s financial woes and the problems facing its schools--violence, ethnic tensions and increased demand for bilingual education--did not scare away prospective superintendents.

“This is a good response for a district of this size,” said Wilson Riles, whose Sacramento-based consulting firm is handling the search for a new superintendent.

Although Riles declined to release names or details about the applicants, he said about half are from California.

Riles said his staff will evaluate each applicant and rank them using the school board’s requirements, including having “good moral values,” experience in a multiethnic school district and financial experience.

Applications will be presented to the school board May 3.
