L. A. Offers Grants for Environment

The city is offering grants to encourage Angelenos to improve and protect their environment.

A grant of $1,000 will be given out in each City Council district. The grants are sponsored by the Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Commission and Southern California Gas Co.

“It’s both a reward and an incentive for people to do things in their community to promote environmental protection and environmental awareness,” said Lillian Kawasaki, general manager of the Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Department.

Grants will go to schools, nonprofit groups or other organizations that apply with plans such as tree planning, community gardens and cleanups--”anything that increases the urban quality of life,” Kawasaki said. “We have so few really green and open spaces in the city we thought it would be a good focus for this year’s grant.”

The commission, the utility and community representatives will be judges.

Deadline for applications is June 30.
