Water Purifier: OffShore Marine Laboratories in Laguna Hills has shipped one of its water-purification units to the island of Truk in Micronesia, where it will be installed in a hotel.

The unit is capable of producing 25,000 gallons of fresh water a day for guests at the Continental Hotel on the island, a World War II battle site that has become popular with recreational divers who explore the coral reefs.

The unit is easy to transport because it comes in the same configuration as a 20-foot ocean shipping container. It is valued at $150,000, said OffShore President Thomas Duncan.

It purifies water through a reverse-osmosis system, forcing salt water through a membrane to filter out salt and other impurities.
