Oil Imports to Top 50%, Study Finds: U.S. oil imports are poised to grow in 1994 because of higher demand and continued declines in domestic crude oil production, according to a study by the Independent Petroleum Assn. of America. Although oil imports have exceeded 50% periodically in the past, the study marks the first time levels are expected to be above 50% on an annual basis. The study is expected to intensify industry calls for federal tax relief and drilling incentives, although officials say there is no hope of reversing the trend.
