Arnold St. Subber; Produced Neil Simon Broadway Hits

Arnold St. Subber, 76, producer of playwright Neil Simon’s early Broadway hits. A native New Yorker educated at New York University, Subber began his career as an assistant stage manager for such legendary figures as Otto Preminger and George S. Kaufman. After working on a production of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” Subber conceived the idea for the hit Cole Porter musical “Kiss Me Kate,” which he co-produced in 1948. Subber met Simon in 1959 and produced his play, “Barefoot in the Park.” Associated with Simon for eight years, Subber also produced his plays “The Star-Spangled Girl,” “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” and “The Gingerbread Lady.” On Tuesday in Berkeley of heart failure.
