If to win or not to win was the question at a regional Shakespeare festival this weekend, for three San Fernando Valley schools, the answer was a resounding win. El Camino High School and George Ellery Hale Middle School of Woodland Hills, and Cleveland High School of Reseda took top awards in the annual Drama Teachers’ Assn. of Southern California Shakespeare Festival, which drew 45 high schools from the region for its 75th annual competition.

“It’s really the big event of the year,” said Sarah Rosenberg, the drama teacher at Cleveland. “It’s nice being an L. A. city school and competing against a lot of private schools.”

The three schools won top awards in their divisions in the 1,400-student competition at Marshall High School in Los Angeles. The 34 Cleveland students, who practiced for about two months for the competition, took first place in three events and second place in two.
