Avery Dennison Corp., the Pasadena-based maker of adhesives and labels, said profit rose 8% to $25.2 million, from $23.3 million in the year-ago quarter. Earnings increased 13% to 45 cents a share, from 40 cents in the first quarter of 1993. The figures include the result of applying new accounting standards to the 1993 earnings. Without taking those changes into account, the increase in first-quarter net earnings was 14% and the increase in earnings per share was 18%.

Revenue, excluding the effects of foreign currency conversion, rose 3% to $667.7 million, from $666.5 million in the year-earlier quarter. Unit volume was up 3% to 4%.

Chief Executive Charles D. Miller said the company’s office products businesses in North America “significantly improved profitability on a modest increase in sales” and that its European materials businesses are also showing improved profits.
