ARCADIA: New Councilman Sheng Chang is in line to be the next mayor of Arcadia and the first minority to hold the post. Last week the City Council chose Chang, a physician, for mayor pro tem, a position from which a council member traditionally goes on to become mayor.

BRADBURY: The City Council has chosen Councilwoman Beatrice La Pisto Kirtley, 44, a school principal and nine-year council member, to be mayor.

CLAREMONT: The City Council has chosen Councilman Algrid G. Leiga, the lone man on the council in the wake of this month’s election, to serve as mayor for next year. Councilwoman Suzan Smith was appointed mayor pro tem.

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE: First-term Councilman David Spence was elected mayor by the City Council. Councilwoman Carol Liu was chosen mayor pro tem.

GLENDORA: Councilman Larry Glenn took the mayor’s chair at the request of the City Council.

IRWINDALE: Julian A. Miranda, 24, has been chosen to serve as mayor by the City Council. Councilwoman Jacquelyn Brecada was appointed mayor pro tem.

LA PUENTE: The City Council elected Joe V. Alderete mayor and incumbent Charles H. Sterling mayor pro tem.

MONROVIA: After an often nasty mayoral election, the City Council, at the behest of Mayor Bob Bartlett, has established a committee to consider changing how the mayor is elected and changing the city clerk and treasurer posts to appointed positions. Bartlett, elected April 12 to the position for a third time, said he would like to see either the council appoint a mayor or the mayor’s term extended from two to four years. A 1978 ballot measure established the mayor as an elected post.

MONTEREY PARK: Councilwoman Judy Chu became the second Asian mayor of this majority Asian city. Chu, a professor of psychology at East Los Angeles College, is making a bid for state Assembly.

ROSEMEAD: The City Council has elected three-term Councilman Robert W. Buesch as mayor. Buesch is a teacher.

SAN GABRIEL: Councilman Sabino Cici was chosen as the new mayor by the City Council. The 16-year councilman owns a locksmith business.

SIERRA MADRE: Councilwoman Mary Ann MacGillivray, a marketing vice president for a health products firm, was elected mayor by the council.

SAN MARINO: The City Council elected first-term Councilman Bernard LeSage as mayor. LeSage, an attorney, has served two years on the council.

SOUTH PASADENA: The City Council elected Dick O. Richards, a former FBI agent who owns an antique shop, to serve as mayor. The city’s first Asian American councilman, Paul Zee, was elected mayor pro tem.

TEMPLE CITY: A Sheriff’s Department head of jails, Councilman Harry Budds, was elected to serve as mayor by the City Council.
