Orange County runners are invited to participate in their own “Run for the Roses,” a 6K benefit run, Sunday at Mile Square Regional Park in Fountain Valley to kick off Kentucky Derby Week.

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. At 9:30, a 10-furlong “fun run” will be held. The 1 1/4 miles is the same distance covered by thoroughbreds in the Kentucky Derby.

There are no entry fees to participate. T-shirts will be sold for $10 each, with proceeds benefiting youth athletics.

More than $2,000 in prizes will be awarded in drawings after the race. In keeping with the Derby Day theme, runners will be given red roses as they cross the finish line.

Booths offering food, drinks and health-oriented information will also be featured.

The event is sponsored by Silky Sullivan’s Restaurant & Irish Pub, which has been putting on the “Run for the Roses” for 10 years. The restaurant will hold Kentucky Derby Day festivities May 7.

More information is available by calling the restaurant at (714) 963-2718.
