Strawberry Set for Release, but Future With Dodgers Remains Uncertain

Share

Darryl Strawberry will be released from a drug treatment center this week, perhaps as soon as today, but his plans as far as the Dodgers are concerned remain unknown.

“I don’t think anybody knows,” said Michael Strawberry, Darryl’s brother. “Darryl hasn’t talked with (the Dodgers) or anything, and they need to figure out what to do as an organization and go from there.”

Michael Strawberry has been involved in the family therapy program at the treatment center, reportedly in Rancho Mirage.

Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, has not said what the club plans to do when Strawberry is ready to return to play. They are paying him $3 million this season and owe another $5 million for next season, the last of his contract. Their options include releasing him with pay, trading him--perhaps picking up a portion of his salary to do so--allowing him to return or finding a way to void his contract.
