Cutbacks Ordered at Kaleida Labs: International Business Machines Corp. and Apple Computer Inc. told their joint venture to cut its work force by 20% and focus on its core multimedia technology. Mountain View, Calif.-based Kaleida Labs Inc. said it will now “focus completely” on delivering its ScriptX multimedia development product and eliminating jobs not essential to rushing the software to market. Kaleida will also stop working on software to control the basic functions of set-top boxes, the devices that will bring such services as movies-on-demand to the living room. “Our vision has not changed; we have only redefined our plans to implement it,” said Mike Braun, Kaleida’s chief executive.
