NORTHRIDGE : ‘Burnout’ Booths Set Up for CSUN Finals

Hoping to ease the quake-frazzled nerves of students at semester’s end, counselors at Cal State Northridge set up two “burnout” booths on campus this week to offer advice on how to beat the stress of finals.

“The last three weeks are the stretch when the demands are greatest,” said Marshall Bloom of the University Counseling Services at CSUN. “But burnout is much worse this semester with all the extra challenges.”

Because of the ongoing chaos on campus after the Jan. 17 earthquake, Bloom said, students have been more vulnerable than usual to feelings of anxiety.

“They say they’re feeling exhausted, that their functioning is not as adequate as they would wish and that they’re working harder than ever but getting less done,” Bloom said. “They might find that they’re not taking care of themselves as they should.”

The stress can bring sleepless nights and nagging colds, Bloom said.

Until Thursday, counselors will provide information on how to sleep better, manage stress and anger, and deal with a “disaster environment,” Bloom said. The information will be available at the campus bookstore and in the courtyard of the student union from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by calling the counseling services at (818) 885-2366.
