Cable Operators Want to Block PacBell Network: The California Cable Television Assn. asked the Federal Communications Commission to look into whether the telecommunications network’s plans to offer competing video service in some parts of the state violate FCC rules. The dispute illustrates the struggle between the telephone and cable industries to move into each other’s markets so they can gain control of future information networks. Pacific Bell expects to get FCC approval in July to install fiber-optic and coaxial cables, which can carry far more information than traditional copper wires.
