Two Amtrak trains were delayed for more than two hours Tuesday night after a 17-year-old girl dived onto the tracks in front of one of the trains and committed suicide, police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred at 10:25 p.m. on the Santa Fe tracks at Culver Drive, Sgt. Jeff Kermode said.

The victim was struck by a southbound train running from Santa Barbara to San Diego with more than 100 passengers on board. It was delayed for two hours, Amtrak spokeswoman Debbie Hare said.

No passengers were injured.

A second Amtrak train traveling north from San Diego to Los Angeles was not involved in the accident but was delayed for two hours and 43 minutes. That train was forced to wait until the accident scene was cleared, Hare said.

The victim was an Irvine resident who had apparently made statements about suicide following a family argument, Kermode said.
