Four San Fernando Valley secondary schools were among the 180 winners in the 1994 California Department of Education’s Distinguished Schools Program.

David Starr Jordan Middle School, John Muir Middle School, and Luther Burbank Middle School, all in the Burbank Unified School District, were honored. The other winner was Rosemont Middle School in the Glendale Unified School District.

Begun in 1985, the Distinguished Schools Program honors outstanding elementary and secondary schools in alternate years.

About 354 secondary schools applied for the 1994 program, and each was visited by a county education official.

Schools were judged on three variables: the ranking of the school’s application; the ranking of the site visit; and the California Learning Assessment System results from 1993 in grades eight and 10.

Representatives of the winning schools will be presented with an honorary plaque and a California Distinguished School flag in an awards ceremony May 27 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
