The widow of former Gov. Richard Snelling ended speculation about her own gubernatorial bid, saying that she will seek reelection as lieutenant governor.

“I think this is the way I can serve Vermont best,” Barbara Snelling said Wednesday.

As lieutenant governor in 1991, Dean became governor upon Snelling’s death. There was speculation that Barbara Snelling would challenge Dean in 1992, but she ran instead for the No. 2 post, winning with 53% of the vote.
