FULLERTON : High School District to Eliminate 27 Jobs

Twenty-seven non-teaching jobs in the Fullerton Joint Union High School District will be eliminated next month because of budget woes, trustees have decided.

Most of the positions will be eliminated through early retirement incentives and attrition, but district officials predict that one or two people will be laid off.

“Our approach is to try to provide as many options as possible for the employees,” Assistant Supt. Greg Bice said. “We’re providing opportunities rather than just saying, ‘You’re out in the cold.’ ”

The 27 jobs to be cut include those of five records clerks, six maintenance workers, two bus drivers, two maintenance supervisors and a director of grounds operations.

District officials said the move will save the district about $750,000.

The district will save another $1 million by cutting programs and reducing expenses for supplies, services and equipment, Assistant Supt. Ronald N. Anderson said.

The district faces a $3.15-million deficit in its $60-million budget for the 1994-95 fiscal year, Bice said. The district is expected to take about $1 million from its reserve fund to balance the budget, he said.

“We all think this is terrible,” school board member Marilyn Buchi said. “I regret that we have to do it but we have to do it.”
