Yemen’s opposing armies both claimed victory Thursday in the fight for a strategic southern city.

A statement from the southern forces said they seized Dhala, which is 65 miles northwest of the southern bastion of Aden on a main route from the north.

But northern officials also said they controlled the city. The claims could not be independently confirmed.

Foreigners continued to flee the country. Britain sent two Hercules C-130 transport planes Thursday to Sana, the capital, to evacuate 154 people, including 67 Britons and 36 Americans.

Casualty estimates in the civil war have varied widely, ranging from a few hundred to 12,000 killed or wounded.
