COMMUNITY COLLEGE TENNIS : Orange Coast Wins Women’s Team Title

Kamala Raj Kumar won a 3 1/2-hour match to help Orange Coast win the State women’s dual team tennis title with a 6-2 victory over Chabot Thursday at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad.

Raj Kumar, playing at No. 4 singles, won, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. She was trailing, 1-5, in the third set, but won four consecutive games to tie it, 5-5. In the third-set tie-breaker, Raj Kumar was down, 2-5, but rallied to win, 10-8.

Toowee Cao of OCC beat Amy Peterson, the sixth-ranked player in the state, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.

Amy Cook won, 6-4, 6-3, and Heather Rainey won, 7-6, 6-1, in singles for the Pirates. Cao and Raj Kumar teamed to win in doubles, 6-2, 6-2. Cook and Rainey closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in doubles.

It was the first State title for OCC and Coach Janice Maran since 1990. The Pirates, who won the Orange Empire Conference last month, ended the season, 19-0. The Pirates beat College of the Desert, 5-1, in the Southern California final Tuesday.

Chabot finished 18-1.
