Victory for Stac in Microsoft Dispute: Microsoft Corp. will have to withdraw from distributors thousands of copies of its DOS operating system software under terms of a preliminary ruling by U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie in Los Angeles. Rafeedie also said he intends to deny a Microsoft request to halt further shipments of disk-compression software made by Stac Electronics. In February, a federal jury ordered Microsoft to pay Carlsbad, Calif.-based Stac $120 million for infringing on patented technology used in Stacker, a software package that allows users to more than double the available space in their computer hard disks.
