Slow Recovery: Tokos Medical Corp. in Santa Ana, a provider of nursing services for women threatened with premature childbirth, is seeing a comeback of sorts.

The company, which posted a stinging $26-million loss for 1993, said it is experiencing a slow-but-steady recovery.

One indication is a so-called “patient census index,” which compares all the services the company has administered in any given month to the business it conducted in January, 1993.

According to a just-released report, Tokos nurses treated 26% fewer patients this February than they did in January, 1993--the lowest point since the company started cataloguing its patient census data.

But in the past three months, business has been growing incrementally, with the company treating only 16% fewer patients in April than it did in January, 1993.

“This is an indication of business trends,” said chief financial officer Nicolas A. Mione. “It appears we are stabilizing.”
