Underwater Noise

Share

* In response to “Beneath the Not So Silent Sea,” May 3:

So, the Defense Department and the shipping and oil industries don’t think whales and other sea life are affected by human-induced noises reaching to 230 decibels underwater. After all, they say, there isn’t any evidence of this. Has anyone researched why whales, seals and dolphins beach themselves on our shores; why whales are found swimming in our inland rivers? I doubt very much that these industries would spend the time and money to research information that could be downright detrimental to their causes.

The rhetoric of these industries sounds like that of the building and development industries concerning the gnatcatcher--there’s just no evidence that human encroachment really affects these creatures.

One thing there’s plenty evidence of--big $$$ is making lots of noise! Again!
