‘TIL THEY MEET AGAIN: The Brea City...

‘TIL THEY MEET AGAIN: The Brea City Council skipped its twice-monthly meeting Tuesday night. Reason: Lack of an agenda. “Why meet just to meet?” Assistant City Manager Tim O’Donnell says. Actually, officials in this city, battered by recent political charges and countercharges, have discussed switching to monthly meetings to save money. . . . But not everyone is happy about that. Resident Bill Vega complains it would shortchange the public and be a “cover-up of the city’s corruption.”

BEE KILLERS: The local Vector Control people have decided on their defense when the Africanized honeybees--the killer bees--reach Orange County at the end of the year. They’re setting up five, 50-gallon pressurized spray units on pickup trucks, filled with a soaplike material that kills the bees. . . . “The idea is to destroy the swarm before it becomes a colony,” says Vector Control’s Fred Beams. “That’s when they’re dangerous.” The Vector Control board will choose a contractor today.

TEACHER FIRST: Newport Beach forensic psychiatrist Park Dietz says he loved the recent New Yorker magazine profile of him. But while the magazine notes he’s best known for high-profile murder cases--he did convince a jury that Jeffrey Dahmer was sane--Dietz says most of his work now is teaching companies how to avert workplace violence. Included: an HBO documentary on the subject. . . . Adds Dietz: “It’s so much more rewarding to prevent these things.”

WORLD SERIES VET: Maybe the pennant-hungry Autrys hired pitching coach Marcel Lachemann as the new manager of the California Angels (C1) because he knows what winning a World Series feels like. Lachemann, 52, was a pitcher for the USC Trojan team that won the 1961 College World Series. . . . Before he became a coach--nine years with the Angels--Lachemann did pitch a little in the majors: He was 7-4 in an abbreviated stint with the Oakland A’s.
