Career Day to Focus on Life Science Work

Scientists can wear blue jeans and use the outdoors as their laboratory, about 400 students will be told Tuesday at a Life Science Career Day at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.

The special day of activity is intended to interest students in disciplines such as farming, home economics and pest control. It is offered by the University of California Cooperative Extension for junior high and high school students.

“We are trying to provide an opportunity for kids to have an exposure to a number of careers that they never thought about,” said Rose Hayden-Smith, spokeswoman for the extension program.

Tuesday’s career day is the first locally by the university, but is expected to be held annually, officials said.

Although several local organizations donated money and resources to the program, the project has been primarily sponsored by the Hansen Trust, established by a former area rancher for agricultural education and research.
