Even the grimmest situations can have a humorous side.

Carmelo J. Santoro, the new head of Platinum Software Corp. in Irvine, joked about his new role during the first innovation awards ceremony of the Orange County Council of the American Electronics Assn.

Santoro, emcee for the event last week, said his latest high-tech job is learning how to defend a company against class-action lawsuits. Santoro, a Platinum board member, had to take over the company after shareholder suits led to the discovery of accounting irregularities.

“When I came to Orange County 15 years ago as a technologist,” he said, “I never thought I’d end up as a fledgling lawyer.”
