LAWNDALE : Council Passes Measures to Thwart Nepotism

Share

The Lawndale City Council approved two measures last week to prevent nepotism at City Hall.

Council members voted unanimously in favor of a law that prohibits the city from hiring relatives of top city employees and elected or appointed officials.

The ordinance also would bar relatives from working in the same department under certain circumstances. Current employees would not be affected as long as they remain in their present positions.

In addition, the council voted 3 to 2 to bar the appointment of relatives to committees. Mayor Harold E. Hofmann and Councilman Larry Rudolph voted against the new policy. They said the measure was aimed at Rudolph’s wife, a parks and recreation commissioner.

Shirley Rudolph was first appointed by Hofmann 12 years ago, four years before Councilman Rudolph was elected.
