OBITUARIES : B. R. Leadabrand; Sculptor, Painter

A memorial service was held last Thursday for Pasadena artist Barbara Ruth Leadabrand, who died of a heart attack May 15. She was 71.

Mrs. Leadabrand was accomplished in sculpture and painting and was particularly known for a line of ceramics called Kids in Clay. She was honored with the Pasadena Arts Council’s 10th Muse Award, which is given annually to an arts leader who has provided guidance, motivation and direction for cultural and civic organizations.

Born in Detroit on Sept. 23, 1922, she grew up in Pasadena and graduated from Pasadena Junior College and the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque.

Survivors include two daughters, Marylinn Kelly of Altadena and Laurie Johnson of Purcellville, Va.; a son, Michael, of Perth, Australia; two sisters, a brother and three grandchildren.

The family asked that any donations be made to a scholarship fund established in Mrs. Leadabrand’s name at the Armory Center for Arts, Pasadena.
