MONROVIA : Senior Citizens to Get Free Smoke Detectors

Share

The Monrovia Fire Department will install smoke detectors free in the homes of all city residents 55 or older as part of a program to decrease the number of senior citizens killed in residential fires.

Statistics show that more than 1,400 Americans 65 or older die each year in blazes that start at home, Fire Chief Ernest Mitchell Jr. said.

The city has purchased about 1,000 detectors from area hardware stores. About 200 have been given away; the remainder will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

People 55 or older can sign up for the free smoke detectors with any senior citizen organization in the area, or they can pick one up at the Fire Department, 141 E. Lemon Ave., during business hours. Firefighters will help install the detectors, Mitchell said.
