In an attempt to improve communication between the public and Ventura County’s two naval installations, the first meeting of the newly formed Ventura County Base Community Council will be held Friday at Ventura City Hall, officials announced this week.

The 7:30 a.m. meeting will involve Navy officials from the Port Hueneme Naval Construction Battalion Center and the Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station, in addition to Ventura County Supervisor Maggie Kildee, Navy spokesman Alan Alpers said.

Alpers said the group was organized by county and municipal leaders and Navy officials to improve communications between the two bases and the community as Navy officials prepare for the 1995 round of the Base Re-alignment and Closure program.

“The council is being formed to diffuse base closure rumors and to provide regularly scheduled interaction between the Navy and the community,” Alpers said. “It’s the council’s goal to explain the (Base Re-alignment and Closure) process and improve communications.”

Navy officials from both bases said they are furnishing the Department of Defense with information about the two facilities--the first step in the biannual process. The next round of closures will be decided by the federally appointed BRAC commission in February, 1995, and announced in July, 1995.

Alpers said Steve Mendonca,) Point Mugu’s deputy BRAC program manager, will attend the meeting and will present a briefing on the base closure process.

The meeting will be held at Ventura City Hall, 501 Poli St., Room 202. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call 989-8094.
