COSTA MESA : Old Computers Teach Students New Tricks

Share

Thirty rebuilt computers were donated to four schools Wednesday under a new program designed to help schoolchildren learn to use the technology.

Computers help students develop their writing skills more quickly, said Linda Morton, a seventh-grade teacher at Lexington Junior High School, who picked up seven computers for her Cypress school from the Coast Community College District office.

“They don’t like the erasing part when they are writing,” Morton said of her students. “So the deleting key is great.”

Her student 13-year-old Cinthia Bryhl quickly agreed. “Instead of having a boring old report to do, I like making it more fun,” she said.

The Computers for Schools program refurbishes and distributes computers discarded by companies, in this case Pacific Bell.

John Britton, a spokesman for Pacific Bell, said his company expects to donate more than 800 used computers during the next year.

Computers were also donated to the Damron Elementary School in Cypress, Portola Middle School in Orange and Cypress High School.
