SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 31-year-old Littlerock man is being sought for questioning about a pipe bomb explosion that killed a woman and injured her 4-year-old son earlier this month.

Scott Douglas Hamby is believed to have made the bomb, but investigators are unsure whether the device was intentionally placed or simply discarded along the dirt road where it exploded when the woman found it.

“Evidence recovered at the scene of the explosion links the suspect to the crime,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Mead.

Lynn Standish, 33, a single mother of three, was killed May 20 after she came upon the pipe bomb while searching for recyclable items in the open desert near her Pearblossom home. There is no indication that Hamby knew Standish.

The woman’s 4-year-old son was injured in the leg by the explosion and is still at Antelope Valley Hospital, where he is expected to undergo surgery. An older brother was unhurt.

“Hamby, who is on parole, has a history of manufacturing and possessing explosive devices,” Mead said. “He is considered extremely dangerous and could be a danger to the community.”

Hamby is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, white, with brown hair, blue eyes and a mustache. He weighs about 180 pounds and has a rose tattooed on one shoulder.

He drives a blue-green, older-model, full-sized Ford pickup with a white camper shell and Nevada license plates. Hamby is often in the Antelope Valley and San Bernardino County areas, Mead said.

Anyone with information on Hamby’s whereabouts is asked to contact the homicide bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
