HOLLYWOOD PARK : Zaahi Breaks Hind Leg and Has to Be Destroyed

Share

Zaahi, who was to have raced in the $300,000 Californian on Sunday at Hollywood Park, had to be destroyed after breaking down during a workout there Thursday morning.

A 5-year-old son of Slew O’ Gold, Zaahi broke his right hind leg.

Owned by Shadwell Stable and trained by Neil Drysdale, Zaahi had four victories in 19 starts and earnings of $356,680. Raced primarily in Europe before he was shipped to California last year, he finished third in the Kensington Handicap in his final start May 1 at Golden Gate Fields.

A field of six is likely when entries for the 1 1/8-mile Californian are taken this morning. The Wicked North, Del Mar Dennis, Stuka, Kingdom Found, Thunder Rumble and Slew Of Damascus are the probable starters.

With Golden Gate Fields shifting its post time on Fridays to 4 p.m. for the rest of its meeting, Hollywood Park will offer two simulcasts from there tonight. The first is scheduled for 6:42, before Hollywood Park’s first post at 7. The other will be shown between Hollywood Park’s first and second races.
