Orange Council Reviews 65 Works Projects

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The City Council this week reviewed 74 construction projects valued at nearly $24 million.

Most are public works projects designed to improve the city’s sewer system, repair streets or improve traffic.

The Public Works Department requested approval of more than 65 projects, which would account for a majority of the city’s capital improvement money.

One proposal is to widen Santiago Canyon Road between Windes Drive and Newport Boulevard at a cost of $1.5 million. Another proposal calls for $3.4 million to improve traffic flow at the Main Street and La Veta intersection.

Two proposals would require changes in the city’s general charter, city officials said. The first is a $1.4-million plan to buy county land for a new library. The second is an $80,000 proposal for design work to help improve response time at a fire station.

In all, city departments submitted proposals for 95 projects, but the city did not have money for all, officials said. The city staff recommended delaying 21 projects, valued at $3.2 million, including replacing the city’s main-frame computer and upgrading the police dispatch system.

The council will vote on the proposed projects June 14 after a public hearing at 7 p.m.
