WOODLAND HILLS : Pierce Gets New Firm to Run Its Swap Meet
The Pierce College Foundation has brought in a new company to run its weekly swap meet, but the meet will not open this week as planned.
A contract with the new, nonprofit company Straight Talk, must be approved by the college’s Board of Trustees. But approval was not sought in time due to a foundation “oversight,” said foundation President James Breeden.
“Hopefully we’ll get it going sometime this month or in July,” Breeden said.
The swap meet is the foundation’s primary source of funding, bringing in more than $100,000 a year, he said.
While the foundation waits for approval, the company that previously held the contract has moved a few miles down the road. A new swap meet operated by Norton Western of Scottsdale, Ariz., will open today at the Winnetka 6 drive-in theater at Winnetka Avenue and Prairie Street. It will run from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday.
Breeden declined to elaborate on why a new operator was brought in, saying only, “It was time for a change.” Norton Western had operated the meet for about five years, he said.
