McKay Christensen, the Angels’ top draft pick, went to Disneyland for grad night after hearing the news Thursday. On Friday, he said he’ll visit Anaheim Stadium next Friday to complete final details of his contract.

After that, it might be awhile before the Angels see him again.

Christensen, from Fresno Clovis West High, will begin his two-year Mormon mission in July or August. He said he isn’t concerned about losing his skills after being away from baseball so long. The Angels hope he remembers to turn left when he gets to first base.

“While I’m away, I’ll be able to exercise and stay in shape,” said Christensen, who batted .486 (34 for 70) with six home runs and 23 runs batted in this past season. “The Angels will be able to send me workouts, things I can do to stay in shape. I’ve always wanted to play (pro) baseball. It’s been a dream of mine, but going on my mission was a priority. The Angels were willing to accommodate me and I appreciate that.”

He said he will turn down a scholarship offer to play football and baseball at Brigham Young. He had signed a letter of intent this year.
