UAW Reaches Tentative Pact With GM: The United Auto Workers union and General Motors Corp. reached the agreement late Monday night, covering 3,500 striking workers in Michigan. UAW officials said GM has agreed to bring work back into the union’s ranks and invest in new equipment as part of the agreement to end the 5-day-old strike at the car maker’s Technical Center in Warren, Mich. A spokesman for the union said a ratification vote was set for today and that workers could be back on the job in the afternoon if the pact is approved. The UAW local struck GM because it said the auto maker has been assigning work to outside contractors. Union bargainers were satisfied with the tentative agreement, said Earl Hartman, an official of UAW Local 160.
